Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a statutory body formed in April 1957 by the Government of India, under the Act of Parliament, ‘Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956’. It is an apex organization under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, with regard to khadi and village industries within India, which seeks to – “plan, promote, facilitate, organise and assist in the establishment and development of khadi and village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.” There are many verticals under the umbrella of Village industries sector.

Khadi& Village Industries Commission is implementing the Leather Footwear Activity under Grmodyog Vikas Yojana (GVY) in order to help leather footwear artisans/beneficiaries. There are three types of projects under the Leather Footwear Activity.

• 25 days footwear manufacturing residential training (free of cost) would be given to the artisans pro bono with the help of Centre of Excellence (CoE). Cost of training of one batch of 10 artisans/beneficiaries is Rs. 3,00,000/-.
  Footwear manufacturing machineries worth Rs. 60,000/- is distributed to each artisan after training (after submission of own contribution depends upon the social category, ie for SC 10 %, ST 10 %, Gen 20 %, BPL 0% of cost of machines).
• One day crash course and footwear repairing toolkits of cost Rs. 3350/- is distributed to each individual artisan (without any own contribution).
• 25 days footwear manufacturing non-residential training (free of cost) would be given to the artisans pro bono at Multi-Disciplinary Training Centre, KVIC, New Delhi and Khadi Gramodyog Vidyalaya Kshetriya, Varanasi. KVIC is providing hand holding support to the footwear artisans (without any own contribution).
